If I were asked to pick one month for the mountains, I’d say without hesitation — September. The summer heat fades, the crowds leave, and the slopes catch fire with gold. Here are five directions that are especially good in autumn.
1. Tian Shan: golden Tian Shan spruce
In September the valleys of the Zailiysky Alatau empty out and the air turns crystal clear. The perfect time to trek to high-altitude lakes — the water lies like a mirror, reflecting the first snow on the peaks.
2. The Caucasus: Indian summer in the gorges
Days are still warm, nights already crisp — the best weather for overnight hikes. The deciduous forests in the gorges turn russet and crimson.
Autumn in the mountains is more honest than summer: steadier weather, cleaner views, and the feeling that the mountains are yours again is priceless.
3. Georgia: mountains and wine at once
September in Georgia means rtveli, the grape harvest. Combine trekking in the Kazbegi region with tasting young wine in the valleys. The best of both worlds.
4. The Alps: the last trails before snow
The high huts are still open while the main tourist stream has already ebbed. Classic pass routes are walked in silence.
5. Home mountains for the weekend
You don’t have to fly far. The best autumn colours are often a couple of hours from home. A September weekend hike reboots you no worse than a big expedition.
